Seaweed (sargassum)

Both coasts can get sargassum seaweed, usually heaviest in late spring and summer; some years are much worse than others. Some beaches are more protected than others, and many resorts clean every morning. If your dates are April–August, this is the single best reason to use an advisor: we check recent reports for your exact beach.

Weather & timing

  • Driest, most popular: December to April.
  • Value months: May, early June, and late October–mid December (outside holidays).
  • Hurricane season: June 1 – November 30; peak risk August–October.

Documents

U.S. citizens flying to Mexico or the Dominican Republic need a valid passport. Both countries use electronic entry/exit forms that change from time to time; we send the current links before you fly.

Who each one fits

  • Honeymoon or couples: Riviera Maya adults-only for variety; Punta Cana for a quiet beach week.
  • Family with small kids: both work — pick the resort for its pool, kids’ club and room layout, not the country.
  • Grandparents + grandkids: Punta Cana’s short transfers and calm beaches are easier.
  • Friends’ trip or celebration: Cancún for nightlife and day trips.

FAQ

Which is cheaper?

Neither is always cheaper. Price depends on the resort, room and dates much more than on the country.

Is the water better in Punta Cana?

Punta Cana beaches tend to be calmer; the Mexican Caribbean has the more famous turquoise color. Both are beautiful at the right resort.

Can I see ruins from Punta Cana?

Not like in Mexico. If history and culture matter, choose the Riviera Maya.
